A 68-year-old Spring Hill man died after he apparently lost consciousness Wednesday afternoon while driving with a female passenger.

Gilbert Wolmart was driving southbound on U.S. 19 near Breakwater Boulevard in a tan Kia minvan when he apparently suffered a medical event, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Wolmart became unconscious and his passenger, Heather Hasentaub, 34, of Hudson, attempted to safely gain control of the vehicle by steering it onto the grass of the western shoulder on U.S. 19, the report stated.

The vehicle traveled into a drainage ditch and then over a driveway, coming to final rest in the drainage ditch.

There was evidence the vehicle bottomed out while traveling through the ditch, but there was no damage to the vehicle, the report stated. Hasentaub was not injured and there was no property damage, according to FHP.

Wolmart was pronounced dead at Oak Hill Hospital and the crash remains under investigation.
