A woman resting in her recliner was trapped inside an engulfing fire, burning her hair and clothes before a relative lifted her and carried her to safety, firefighters said.
Hernando County Fire Rescue and Sumter Fire Rescue responded shortly after 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at 29062 Friar St., according to a sheriff's report.
By the time deputies arrived, Gloria Bowman, 75, was lying in the yard across the street and being treated by paramedics.
Bowman said she was in her motorized recliner when it caught fire. She was unable to get out of the chair and started screaming for help, deputies said.
Her grandson-in-law, Brian Walker, 39, entered the house through the front door and removed her from the fire, according to the report.
Bowman complained of smelling smoke earlier to her granddaughter, who in turn could not see or smell any traces of smoke, deputies said.
Bowman suffers from dementia, so her granddaughter, who is her primary caregiver, did not think anything of it, according to the report.
Walker and Bowman's granddaughter were on their way to the store when they noticed the orange glow coming from inside the house, deputies said.
The couple heard Bowman scream, "I'm on fire," and Bowman entered the house through the front door to rescue her, according to the report.
Walker and a passerby lifted her, carried her across the street and a neighbor used a garden hose to extinguish the flames on Bowman's clothes, deputies said.
Walker suffered burns on his hands, according to the report.
Bowman sustained second-degree burns on 25 percent of her body. She was taken to Citrus Memorial Hospital and is expected to be transported to Shands Burn Center in Gainesville, deputies said.
There were no apparent signs of foul play, according to the fire marshal.
