Prescription drugs found with sleeping driver

Two drivers were arrested Tuesday for illegal possession of prescription drugs: one sleeping behind the wheel, the other a DUI suspect who crashed her car.

The first arrest happened after a deputy on patrol said he noticed a car with its headlights on parked in front of a business at 144 Commercial Way. Being that it was 4:30 a.m. and the business was closed, the deputy decided to investigate.

He said he found the car running and a man in the driver's seat slumped over onto the center console and sleeping. In plain view was a notebook with a small amount of a white powder on top, according to a report.

The deputy rapped on the window to wake up the driver, but Christopher Castorino didn't respond. The deputy eventually opened up the door and roused the suspect by tapping on his arm.

Castorino was confused and couldn't explain how he came to be outside the business, but eventually became more coherent and admitted that he had snorted Methadone, a report states.

Castorino, 30, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and controlled substance.

Later that day, around 9:40 p.m., deputies were sent to a car crash on Commercial Way, near the area of Beverly Court. They discovered a disabled yellow Mini Cooper on the northbound lanes and a woman in the driver's seat who had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, according to a report.

The driver, Kelly Leonard, 43, believed she was near the intersection of Cortez and Mariner boulevards.

Witnesses told a deputy that Leonard was traveling at a "high rate of speed" when her car swerved and popped a tire when it hit the curb. Field sobriety tests reportedly indicated Leonard was impaired and deputies who searched the car say they found prescription pills and red wine in a travel mug.

A blood alcohol test at the county jail gave results of .045 and .042. Florida law presumes intoxication at .08.

Leonard was charged with DUI and possession of a controlled substance.
