More than 70 firefighter candidates navigated the physical agility test Monday and Tuesday in the parking lot of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. They were vying for one empty slot with Hernando County Fire Rescue.
On Tuesday, Jeff Day of Brooksville started the timed course by demonstrating his proficiency in pulling on his "bunker gear" and oxygen mask. He moved on to climbing a ladder with a coil of hose slung over his shoulder, followed by knocking over cones with a blast of water from a hose. From there he moved stacks of coiled hose and finished with hoisting hose on a rope.
He had eight minutes to finish the course; his time: 6:20.
