Candidate announces school board run

Cynthia J. Moore, of Brooksville, is running for the District 5 seat for the Hernando County School Board.

Sandra Nicholson, who has served the longest among the five board members, currently holds the seat.

Moore, 67, was an elementary-level teacher in Hernando County for 40 years. Her last job was at Spring Hill Elementary School, she said.

"I'd like to see the board go back to the cohesiveness it used to have," said Moore, who declined to be specific.

She described herself as a "child advocate" and said Superintendent Wayne Alexander never should have been allowed to fulfill his contract after he rescinded his resignation earlier this year.

She also thinks those out-of-county students who attended Nature Coast Technical High School should have been allowed to graduate at the school.

Nature Coast is a magnet school and only in-county students are permitted to attend. The board ruled last month that only the upcoming seniors would be allowed to remain at Nature Coast.

"I am for the children and I think the school board seems to forget about that," she said.

Moore said she disagreed with Nicholson on a number of issues, but declined to go into more detail.

She filed July 2 at the Hernando County Supervisor of Elections office.

Vi Coogler, of Brooksville, filed earlier this week. He is a candidate for the District 3 seat, currently held by Chairwoman Dianne Bonfield.

Neither Nicholson nor Bonfield had filed for re-election as of Thursday.
