An existing 120-foot pole along Commercial Way has been activated for AT&T customers, the company announced Tuesday.
The cell tower, located at the Tarpon Boulevard intersection just north of Spring Hill Drive, is designed to boost coverage along the major highway and for residents in the surrounding Timber Pines communities, said AT&T spokeswoman Kelly Starling.
"As we continually expand our wireless network, we identify areas where there is growth and development and the need for further coverage and capacity," Starling said. "Spring Hill is one of those areas. This new cell site is part of our mission to connect people with their world wherever they are."
Last year, AT&T activated towers in Spring Hill and Weeki Wachee.
The company has yet to announce its forecast for 2009, but it had planned to spend $220 million in 2008 to increase its coverage in Florida.
More tower activations are expected for Hernando County, but Starling would not be more specific.
Another tower was activated this week at a cell site on Boyette Road in Riverview, according to a media release.
AT&T has declared its high-speed (3G) network to be the fastest-growing in the nation.
Starling said at least one other cell phone carrier uses the tower at the corner of Commercial and Tarpon Boulevard, but she did not know which one.
