Officer's Example Enriched Our Lives

» 7 Comments | Post a Comment

When Capt. Scott Bierwiler of the Hernando County Sherriff's Office was tragically killed last week, he can truthfully be said to be a son of God. While there are few words that can make up for this loss, we can only hope to provided some words of comfort for his family, friends and the community.

Capt. Bierwiler had big shoes to fill as he followed his father, Frank Bierwiler, a former N.Y. State Trooper, who moved to Hernando County more than 30 years ago. The elder Bierwiler was a unique human being who brought compassion and caring to our community.

Not to be forgotten for her contribution to his character is Scott's loving mother and Frank Sr.'s devoted wife, Maureen, herself a longtime fixture working at St. Theresa's Catholic Church.

After losing a very questionable election for sheriff, Frank Bierwiler went about founding Daystar, a Christian facility that offers help and hope to hundreds of less fortunate Hernando County residents. This aid was offered to all regardless of any other considerations.

Capt. Bierwiler had a great teacher and father who instilled God, family and country deep into his psyche. What followed was the emerging character of Capt. Bierwiler that embodied those principals. He put them into practice in his everyday life. His example as a courageous law enforcement officer is exemplified by his citations and medals, but that is not the only test of courage. Courage is exhibited in many ways and one test is the respect you get from your peers. They aren't fooled by accolades, but they can and are reassured by actions.

There is little that one can say about family that is not dwarfed by the love and affection shown by his wife and children and the rest of his immediate family. It has been said many times before that we are better off for a few wonderful souls that have been blessed to walk among us.

There can be no doubt that we in Hernando Country have been doubly blessed to have had a father and son contribute so much to enrich our lives.
