Jan. 1 will mark the first anniversary of a big day for public health in our community. It was one year ago that Brooksville and Spring Hill regional hospitals, Oak Hill Hospital, Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center and Citrus Memorial Health System all became tobacco-free campuses.
The commitment of these hospitals to a healthy work force and community is to be admired, as this initiative was not an easy undertaking.
In spite of the threat of losing patients, providers and employees, and the challenges that any policy change presents, they have been steadfast in their belief that the foundation of their existence is healing and wellness.
What adds to the celebration of this anniversary is the fact that these health care providers, competitors on many other endeavors, united for this initiative.
They have reached out to neighboring counties to offer assistance, as others have followed their lead.
On behalf of the Hernando County Health Department and the Nature Coast Community Health Center, congratulations on your success and thank you for your commitment to the health of our residents and visitors.
