In the Dec. 4 edition of Hernando Today, under Dr. Maglio's column, which personally I love to read, there was a cartoon of tumbleweeds and the empty store fronts.
Having worked in this county as a registered nurse and as a past owner of a business in Hernando County, I felt I need to make a statement.
Has anyone ever heard of a moratorium on building? Am I the only one or has anyone noticed that we have so many open, empty store fronts and homes in this county that is it ridiculous?
My wise Grandmother used to say, "If you can't take care of what you have, you don't deserve more." We can't take care of what we have in this county, and the blight is spreading like cancer. Let's just build more and I guarantee they will not come in the near future.
If we want to put people back to work, why don't we fix what we have, upgrade what we have, to code?
The downtown of Brooksville is in severe need of restoration and Spring Hill is becoming somewhat of a DMZ.
The city of Brooksville has some beautiful buildings.
Owners cannot fix up the two-story buildings and make apartments so that store owners can live upstairs and have a business downstairs due to our antiquated codes in this city.
People are losing their homes left and right, people in the construction businesses are losing their livelihoods and have no work here.
There is a renovated building that used to be the old Brooksville Regional Hospital sitting mainly empty and I could go on and on, but I am hoping you will get the point.
More is not better. Take care of what we have, put construction people back to work to fix what is broken.
