Raccoon tests positive for rabies

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

A raccoon that bit a dog multiple times near Benes Roush Road has tested positive for rabies, the health department said Thursday.

The dog was not up to date on its rabies vaccination and is temporarily being held at Hernando County Animal Services, according to a release from the Hernando County Health Department.

Health officials say they don't suspect humans were exposed to the raccoon or the dog.

Animals with rabies be aggressive, attacking for no apparent reason, or act very tame. Rabid animals may drool a lot due to difficulty swallowing and may stagger or become paralyzed.

For more information, contact the health department at 352-540-6800.
