A man who authorities say illegally advertised himself online as a pediatrician surrendered at the county jail on Wednesday morning.
Detectives began their investigation into Gary Lloyd, 50, after an anonymous complaint led them to a Web site for the "Florida Pediatric Group."
On the Web site was a photo of a man in a white lab coat, stethoscope slung around his neck, who is identified as Gary Lloyd, M.D. Detective Tommy Breedlove said he found a matching photo of Lloyd in the driver's license database.
Breedlove dug deeper. The Florida Department of Health's Office of Unlicensed Activities reportedly told the detective that Lloyd was not registered as a doctor in this state. On Sept. 4, a fellow detective, Philip Lakin, placed a recorded phone call to the number listed on the Web site to set up an exam for a fictitious child.
The man on other line, who identified himself as Gary, said his clinic hadn't actually opened yet due to a "disagreement with the state," an affidavit states.
He gave prices for various medical exams, called himself an "authorized doctor" and said he worked out of the University of Connecticut, an affidavit states.
Lakin referred to the suspect as "Dr. Lloyd" throughout the conversation and Lloyd never corrected him, according to an affidavit.
On Sept. 10, an official with the Pasco County Department of Health told Breedlove that Lloyd had attended a CPR class wearing a white coat with "Gary Lloyd M.D." on the breast. She identified Lloyd from a photo lineup, an affidavit states.
The next day, a search warrant at Lloyd's home, 10330 Yellowlegs Ave., reportedly yielded a false diploma from the University of Connecticut; business cards for Dr. Gary Lloyd; a request to a local bank that his checks be printed with an "MD" title; and a falsified Tampa General Hospital identification card.
A warrant was issued for Lloyd on Monday for a charge of attempted unlicensed practice of a medical profession.
Denny Crawford, who said he was Lloyd's life partner, answered the phone at Lloyd's home on Wednesday afternoon. He had no comment until hearing back from Lloyd's lawyer.
Deputy Threatened By Suspected Drunk Driver
A Zephyrhills man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he knocked over eight mailboxes with his pickup, then ran over the remnants two more times while screaming "Wahoo!" a report states.
Witnesses on Lacanto Street lost track of the suspect, Daniel Reid, 26, when he sped off north on California Street. Reid got as far as the S-curve on California before a deputy pulled him over Tuesday night.
Deputies had to handcuff Reid and bind his feet because he was kicking and banging his head on the cruiser's windows. Traffic Deputy Gisele Mulverhill cut short the field sobriety tests because of Reid's "violent actions" and took him directly to jail to continue the investigation.
At the jail, Reid's "belligerent" behavior continued. Reid refused to provide a breath sample and "presented me with his middle finger and advised that it was a present for me," Mulverhill reported.
Mulverhill prepared five traffic citations, including failure to display registration, driving on a suspended license and DUI.
Reid refused to sign the citations and then reportedly charged at the Mulverhill, saying "Come on, let's go." Despite four corrections officers holding him back, Reid got close enough to Mulverhill that she could touch his chest, a report states.
Reid was additionally charged with criminal mischief, assault on an officer and refusal to sign a citation.
