Obamanomics

Why it is that no one is mentioning that one of Sen. Barack Obama's chief economic advisers is Rubert E. Rubin, former partner in the failed Lehman Brothers financial institution? Until recently, he was a board member of Ford, which has been suffering severe losses, and chairman of the executive committee of Citigroup, another bank in financial trouble.

As recently as this past April, he was quoted by the New York Times as saying that "few could predict the storm that hit banks hard."

So why would we think that, with Rubin's advice, Obama's policies would solve the current economic crisis?

Lightmare

In reference to the new stoplight at Powell Road and Sterling Hills, I have observed that this stoplight cycles through every 30 seconds. I observe this every morning at 3 a.m. on my way to work.

I'm no pro as to the inner workings of a stoplight, but I imagine a light that cycles this often is being put through some very unnecessary wear and tear. So not only do I have to stop at this light almost every morning at 3 a.m. with no other cars in sight, but now my tax money will also be paying for the repairs when the light starts to fail prematurely.

The Good, The

Great And The Hot

We took advantage of the hazardous waste collection this morning. We were impressed with the organization of the event. Tax dollars were well spent.

Good job!

Also, we attended the Navy concert at Hernando High School last night. The concert was superb! Why was the air conditioning turned off just after the concert started? We and many others had to leave because of the temperature in the gym. I am e-mailing the band to explain why we had to leave. The music was great. It wasn't their fault.

Spend, Spend, Spend

How big is Hernando County that we need to spend, spend, spend - $89,000 on live streaming video? Why does everyone think every person alive has a computer? I, and many, do not. Why not just leave it on TV? Well, gee, I don't know. Why not have a guy in the corner with a camera? It can easily be put in archived storage on a disk. Public access, use TV news, newspaper - $89,000, $12,000. I didn't know we are so wealthy.

As to Bright House, I can only afford basic - $18 a month. To jump up one tier is $50 a month. So, more access we can have. How about more access to THE Bus and whatever else we truly need? I could use stamps.

I don't know much, as I get news mostly from my local paper. I just moved here, and it seems I can't even open my Hernando Today and see that we are either cutting back or spending.

Please, let's ask more of the Hernando citizens. I don't ride THE Bus, but it's a need. Twelve-thousand a year would sure be a pretty nice income for me.

Well, I'm still on the first page of my paper, so I'll probably be heard from again, if my opinions count.

Put that money where your mouth is. It needs to be in people's bellies. Buy uniforms for kids to play ball. Put gas in more cars. Poor people love Hernando also. They can't get to places they need or want.

Dog Park Needs Donations

I have seen several articles in your paper about events to bring our pets, like the Fur Ball at the Palace Grand and the annual Soggie Doggie day at Pine Island. My husband and I moved to Spring Hill from Long Island after we retired in 2003. I have volunteered at the local SPCA here for a few years and we also have two dogs.

We were surprised and very disappointed to learn that there is no dog park in all of Hernando County. My town's Rotary Club has been taking donations since last year to build the first dog park here in Spring Hill, and it was due to open this year. However, it is still not completed, and they say it is due to the economy and shortage of donations.

Can you please do something to bring this to the attention of dog-loving benefactors in our community or advertise it somehow to help the Rotary Club of Spring Hill meet its goal in donations so the dog park can be completed and open before the end of 2008 or early 2009?

I ask for your help in achieving this goal for all of us who love our animals and want a safe place to bring them so they can run and play with other dogs. I thank you in advance for your assistance in this important matter.
