Fox Chapel Fundraiser Brings In $750

A fundraising drive at Fox Chapel Middle School has raised $750 to date for a young girl whose mother was killed by a suspected drunk driver.

But there's much more on the horizon.

The teacher's union has promised to match the funds raised by teacher Steve Haberlin's classes by up to $1,000. Haberlin has one more fundraiser planned for mid-November to try to meet that threshold.

On Sept. 10, 4-year-old Summer Moll was riding with her mother on the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway in Tampa when a sport utility vehicle going the wrong way crashed into their vehicle. The collision killed Moll's mother, Jennifer O'Boyle, 24, and left the girl with multiple broken bones.

Police arrested Cheryl Riemann, 25, on suspicion of DUI in connection with the crash.

Haberlin's students have been honing their writing skills by crafting letters to the editor and pleas for donations. It has also served as a lesson in civic duty.

Students have raided their piggy banks and sacrificed allowances to raise the $750. Most didn't believe it would add up so fast.

"The students were really amazed," Haberlin said. "When it's a good cause, people will still help out."
