Alert Issued On Phishing Scam

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Authorities are warning the public about a new scam that promises big money for little work.

A recent classified newspaper ad states "in bound customer service reps needed for immediate start in the Brooksville area." It is placed by a company called Permission Research and includes a toll-free number.

Authorities say the scam works like this:

After calling the number, the victim receives a packet in the mail that includes an application that requires personal information. There is also a check for $2,500.

A letter informs the applicant that he or she has been selected as a regional representative and that they need to complete an assignment within 48 hours. The victim is supposed to cash the check and keep $300 as payment for two hours of work. The rest should be wired to a Lee Flewox in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The check is a fake. If you deposit the check, you will be liable for $2,200 when it bounces. Beware answering ads that promise lots of money for a little amount of work.
