SPRING HILL - Authorities say a man tried to cover up a drunken driving crash by parking his Jeep and reporting it stolen.

Deputy Derek Origon was taking the suspect's statement early Tuesday morning when a report came in that the Jeep in question was found badly damaged in the Beall's parking lot on Cortez Boulevard.

Once on scene, Origon confirmed that the Jeep did belong to James Bailey, but parts of the suspect's story didn't add up. Bits of wood were scattered throughout the damage and it was obvious to the deputy that the Jeep hadn't struck the light pole it was parked next to.

The deputy confronted Bailey with these facts and the suspect admitted that he been out drinking the night before and crashed into the woods somewhere, a report shows.

Bailey, 32, of 13024 Lola Drive, was charged with filing a false police report and giving a false name to law enforcement.
