Mermaids On Mission To Myrtle Beach

WEEKI WACHEE - The world-famous mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs attraction in Florida, will be performing at Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Aug. 1-3.

The mermaids have scheduled three performances each of the three days, marking the first time in the 61-year history that the mermaids have performed outside of the famous spring of Weeki Wachee's underwater theater.

Three veteran mermaids from Weeki Wachee Springs attraction have been chosen to embark on this unique performance.

Mermaids Marcy Terry, Stayce McConnell and Carli Dofka were chosen because they bring more than 25 years of mermaid experience to the event.

Ripley's "Ray Bay," a 15-foot deep, 85,000-gallon saltwater tank, will be the setting for this unique and historical performance. Following each performance, a meet and greet and photo opportunities will be available with the mermaids. Other special programs will include high tea with the mermaids and a special Stingray Splash with the mermaids where guests will have the opportunity to safely swim, splash and frolic with stingrays and mermaids.

"We are very excited about the opportunity to take our show on the road," said Mermaid Manager Marcy Terry. "We feel privileged to represent Weeki Wachee Springs and will provide them a feel for the magic that has been our show for 60 years."

Terry recently returned from a scouting trip to Ripley's to see what challenges the mermaids would face. Ripley's invited her to swim with tail to test the water.

"There were a few concerns initially," said Terry. "Our breathing ability, performing in salt water, and the stingrays and sharks that will be swimming with us in the tank topped the list. It turned out there wasn't anything to concern ourselves with, everything is great and it's a beautiful facility.

We have created a special show that will look beautiful in those surroundings and will represent Weeki Wachee at its best."
