I was pleasantly surprised to see the editorial flying in the face of the main Tribune recommendation to defeat issue 1. It's good to see independent thinkers on the same issue who are not stymied by the big bosses in their own company.
Absolutely we have to try and get that 60 percent majority on something that actually helps us. Don't ever forget that the 60 percent majority constitutional amendment only passed by 56 percent of the vote. It would have failed today. I hope it is eventually repealed and goes back to a simple democratic majority. But the same voters who passed that also passed the 20 kids in a classroom law in 2001, which was opposed by school leaders and caused millions in spending to increase school capacity and the hiring more teachers today. This is a major reason for high school taxes today. The voters demanded it?
Some voters will always be tricked, remain ignorant and perhaps suffer for their entire lives with the leadership they "deserve," but if enough of us show up on important issues we can at least swing the low turnout elections to benefit everyone - in spite of themselves.
Next November we will have little chance of any constitutional amendments passing just based on shear numbers of uninformed voters in a presidential race. We will probably even be stupid enough to re-elect a couple of our worthless commissioners and school board members. I pity the Spring Hill firefighters, too, in their timing.
At any rate, vote "Yes" on Amendment 1 and then continue the pressure for further tax reform on the November ballot and every ballot thereafter until they finally get it right. We can win one vote at a time. Politicians fear numbers that grow.
