BROOKSVILLE - When county commissioners today interview the three candidates applying for the job of county administrator, what will they be looking for?
What qualities should the next administrator have to guide Hernando County in an atmosphere beset by community unrest over rising taxes and a growing call to rein in government spending?
Today, commissioners will have before them a three-page description of the position that spells out some of the job requirements.
In general, the county's "top boss" is responsible for the administration of all departments under the board of county commissioners.
What does that entail? According to the job description, the new administrator will:
Administer and carry out the directives and policies of county commissioners and make sure they are enforced.
Provide to the board any recommendations on programs that would improve the county and the welfare of residents.
Prepare and submit to county commissioners an annual operating budget, capital budget and capital program.
Establish the schedules and procedures to be followed by all county departments, offices and agencies in connection with the budget.
Suspend, discharge or remove any employee under the board's jurisdiction.
The person will have a master's degree in public or business administration or related field from an accredited college or university and five years of related responsible governmental administrative-management and supervisory experience.
And how much will this person be paid?
That is negotiable. However, the previous administrator made about $136,277.
