BROOKSVILLE - Longtime school board member and vice chairman Jim Malcolm announced Tuesday that he will not seek a fifth term on the Hernando County School Board.

A Brooksville resident, Malcolm will have held the District 4 seat for 16 years when he steps down in November.

"It's just time," he said. "Sixteen years is a long time, and I haven't lost my passion for what it is I'm doing - it's just time to retire."

Malcolm said his wife, Loise, a registered nurse, is also ready to retire.

"Holding elective office is a partnership, and you can't do it without your spouse," he said. "I'll be 65 in July. Isn't that when people are supposed to retire?"

Prior to joining the board, Malcolm spent 11 years as a teacher and worked as Brooksville City Manager in the early '90s.

Three area residents have already filed to run for his seat: Spring Hill engineer Robert Neuhausen, Spring Hill insurance agent James Yant and Masaryktown waitress, college student and mother Courtney Rinier.
