Art, Poetry Contest To Raise Domestic Violence Awareness

» 1 Comment | Post a Comment

The Purple Leopard Design Studio, an interior design studio and specialty boutique, will host an exhibit and reception for the judging of the Dawn Center's second annual Art and Poetry Contest. This event will held free of charge at 100 N. Brooksville Ave. on Monday, Dec. 15 at 5 p.m.

The Dawn Center is holding the Art and Poetry Contest to raise awareness among youth about domestic and sexual violence. The Dawn Center, in conjunction with the Hernando County School District, invited middle and high school students to create an original piece of work that reflects this year's contest theme: "Many views. One vision: making Hernando County free of domestic and sexual violence."

Student artwork and poetry will be on display during the event. Members of the public are invited to enjoy light refreshments as they tour the exhibit. The artwork and poetry will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis. A deposit is required to reserve a piece of artwork. All proceeds will benefit the Dawn Center's programs.

Last year, the Dawn Center received nearly 300 contest entries, and this year it expects to receive even more. The winning artwork and poetry will be used to help the Dawn Center create awareness throughout the community. It will also be featured in the Dawn Center's Online Boutique at www.cafepress.com/DawnCenter, where you can also find items featuring the artwork from last year's contest winners.

A panel of judges will review the submissions at the Dec. 15 event. Each student who participated will receive a certificate for a free game of bowling, including shoe rental, at Spring Hill Lanes. However, special prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in each category. First place winners in each category will win $150 along with gift certificates for local restaurants and entertainment. Prizes will be awarded in January at a celebration hosted by the Purple Leopard.

The Dawn Center of Hernando County serves women, men and children who have been victims of domestic and/or sexual violence. The Dawn Center has a 24-hour crisis hotline and a secure, unlisted shelter location for victims who need a safe place to stay. Outreach services, including individual advocacy, group sessions, legal advocacy and public speakers, are also available.

The Dawn Center's mission statement is: "To end the cycle of family violence, abuse and sexual assault ... where home is a safe place."
