Crude oil dropped to $40 a barrel Friday, a change likely triggered by recent reports of widespread job losses, according to AAA Auto Club South.
As the national unemployment rate rose to 6.7 percent, the cost of crude oil dropped from $53.43 to $40.81, the lowest level in five years. As a result, the average price for a gallon of regular gas decreased by 9 cents from a week ago.
The cost for a gallon of gas in Florida is below $1.79.
