A new elementary school may be on the horizon for Spring Hill residents.
At an afternoon workshop Tuesday, Hernando County School Board members agreed to further discussions of a property purchase at Suncoast Boulevard.
The property is located off County Line Road between Mariner Boulevard and US 19, with school district officials preliminarily deciding there would likely only be space on the property for an elementary school, rather than a school that also includes middle school grades.
"Traffic is the biggest issue to address," board member Pat Fagan said. "I don't think we can have more than a K-5. We've already gotten ourselves into parking problems with our (other two) K-8 schools."
This was a follow-up to the board workshop on July 29, when the board directed staff to attempt to reduce the asking price of the property. The total cost has now been reduced from $1.06 million to $800,000.
"Five-hundred thousand would have been better than $800,000, but I still think it's a good buy," board member John Sweeney said. "Nobody wants to keep our (students) in portables."
The purchase would be paid for through impact fees and other district funds.
