County Has Double Standard On Safety

I would like to say to Hernando Today, "great news over the two page spread of the county rights-of-way off Belkton Avenue."

Now I would like to report another sinkhole that has not got any attention whatsoever by the newspaper or the county and it's not too far from Springstead High School on Landover Boulevard.

I wrote about it to the county several months back but their reaction was "it's a vacant lot." However, when it comes to county maintaining county rights-of-way, it gets the full attention of the Sheriff's office, county public works department, the newspaper and the neighbors. That deserves a "WOW" for all concerned.

But where is all that attention for the sinkhole on Landover Boulevard. Oh, well, that's a vacant lot. I guess the county public works department and code enforcement department does not have to be concerned about the safety of our children or others that walk by that sinkhole everyday; or that it is within a stone's throw from the sidewalk.

I guess the county and all concerned only give their full attention to the safety of others when they might be sued. I think it's the latter first, and citizens' safety second. I see another one of the county's double standards here, what's good for the county but not others.

I believe when it comes to the safety of everyone in the county, it should be treated equally. Any sinkhole in this county, no matter where it be, vacant lot, (uninsured) or not, should be addressed immediately and given full attention.

I suggest the newspaper takes a ride over to Landover Boulevard and looks at that large vacant lot. I also suggest that you take a few photos of that sinkhole and give it a two page spread. Maybe you would want to report that the county almost bought that land to build a school years ago, but the price went up when the county tried to buy it.

I hope the taxpayers of Hernando County are very concerned about the children and others that have to walk by that sinkhole everyday. Please let your county administrator and commissioners know your feelings about the sinkhole problems in Hernando County that are not getting proper attention.

Where's Our Tax Break This Year?

What happened to the Florida tax break for school children this year? There are poor families in the State of Florida that can't afford school supplies, much less school clothes.

The article about the homeless students in Hernando County was very disturbing. Thanks to Hernando Today for keeping your readers informed of local news around our county.

Thank You For Our Freedom

Editor's note: This letter was addressed to all U.S. soldiers.

First and foremost, I would like to say thank you for all that you have done for us! I don't know really where to start, but I do know that if it was not for you all standing up for our country, and fighting for us, then we would not have the freedom we in America have been blessed to have.

As I sit here surrounded by family and friends I have today, I realize what it means to be free. It does not always mean getting exactly what you want. No, No instead being free, means that you can go to church and worship God, and give thanks to Him.

Being free means that you can live in a place filled with harmony, not hatred.

Being free means, standing up for what you believe in, and not getting into trouble.

Being free is what we as Americans are lucky to experience. And I do not know of any other people willing to put their life on the line, in order to help us keep our freedom.
