Hernando County commissioners came to the correct conclusion Tuesday when, like holding a smoldering piece of coal, they suddenly dropped the misguided idea of forcing the sheriff's office to fund itself through a municipal services taxing unit, or MSTU.
It's sad that a recent effort to infuse more culture into Hernando County floundered. To their credit, organizers seeking to schedule concerts by the Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra are not giving up.
Is the county board taking the easy way out? We applaud the proposed lowering of the tax millage by a total 1.57 mils, which looks like it will fly tonight at the final budget hearing. But is this all a shell game?
