The current economy is definitely being felt by the majority of families in our community. As budgets start to feel the pinch families are looking at which expenses they can cut.
It might be tempting to feel that since your pet is kept indoors or leashed when outside, that you can cut back on veterinary visits or monthly medications. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security. Keep your pets health on the top of your priority list.
Pet are able to escape out of doors or out of yards every day. Even the most vigilant pet parent has had this experience. In addition, mosquitoes and other insects easily find their way indoors bringing with them a variety of pet diseases.
In just the past week I personally rescued two pets that were roaming the streets after being frightened by the storms and escaping their homes. It would have been much easier to find their families if the had been microchipped.
Not knowing if they had their vaccinations, I had to keep them confined to protect my personal pets. Now in addition to being frightened, they were confined in a strange place.
It is important for the welfare of your pet that they receive regular inoculations, heartworm preventative, flea prevention and especially their rabies vaccination. Rabies is becoming more of a problem for animals every year.
When it comes to that furry ball of love, play it safe and see your veterinarian regularly for preventative health care. It can add years to your pet's life.
The economy is also affecting the animal rescue organizations that help our lost and homeless friends. Remember to donate.
