Barbecue to benefit Sgt. Frank Loreto
BROOKSVILLE Fraternal Order of Police will host a fundraiser barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at the Hernando County Fairgrounds located at 6436 Broad St. (U.S. 41). Hernando County Sheriff's Sgt. Frank Loreto has recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer and is undergoing treatment. The event will be a fundraiser to help offset the medical costs. Bring the family for a day of games and food. WQYK will be airing remotely throughout the afternoon; and Tampa Bay Buccaneer players will be meeting, greeting, and cooking. Raffles will include a seven-day Hawaii trip and two 42-inch flat screen televisions. Ticket cost will be $10 per single, $15 per couple, or $20 for entire family and will be available at the gate. Ham Radio Day at county airport
BROOKSVILLE Spring Hill Amateur Radio Club (SHARC) amateur radio operators will host a Ham Radio Field Day from 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, through 2 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at American Aviation located at 2495 Broad St. at the Hernando County Airport. During the National Field Day for Amateur Radio, FCC licensed hams will set up amateur radio stations across the United States to contact other ham stations in a display of emergency communications capabilities. Field Day at Pedersen Park
HERNANDO BEACH Hernando County Amateur Radio Association will participate in the American Radio Relay League-sponsored Field Day activities from 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26 through 2 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at Linda Pedersen Park, 6300 Shoal Line Blvd. Emphasis will be on radio operator communication skills and efficiency under emergency conditions, as this club will compete against hundreds of other emergency Field Day locations across the USA. When all other communication is down due to a storm or other emergency, amateur radio operators rise to the occasion, often providing the only communication to the outside world in those first critical 24 to 36 hours. The public is welcome to observe and learn about ham radio. Information will be available on how to become a Ham and to sign up for its next beginning class to be held in August. SPRING HILL Spring Mermaids Service Unit of the Girl Scouts of America will host its fourth annual family picnic from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 27, in Shelter 1 at Crews Lake Park located at 16739 Crews Lake Road, off Shady Hills Road. FASC to sponsor charity dinner
SPRING HILL Filipino American Social Club (FASC) will sponsor a charity dinner for the People Helping People organization from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at the Senior Citizens Club of Hernando County, 7925 Rhanbuoy Road, off Forest Oaks Boulevard. People Helping People is an interfaith organization which helps fight hunger in the county by providing free meals, clothing, groceries and resource material to the homeless and families in need. BROOKSVILLE Love Your Neighbor announces that it will team with the Brooksville Business Alliance and will offer "Hot Summer Nights in Downtown Brooksville" from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 17 and Aug. 21. Downtown restaurants and shops will be open for business with plans for live entertainment and family activities including chalk art on the street and artists' displays.
