Our government is out of control!
There is no reason that a Hernando County commissioner's salary is a state mandated annual salary of more than $60,000 per year for a part-time job when the median household income of the county is $43,000 per year.
We have heard the commissioners say they have no control of the compensation and work full-time for the county. But most have another source of income.
If the job is really a full-time job, then they should give up the other source of income they have.
This board has asked every taxpayer in this county to give up something, but they give nothing.
Attorney General Bill McCollum stated in May 2008 that commissioners could return all or part of the compensation to the taxpayers.
As of Sept. 24, none stepped forward.
It is time for us to change to a charter form of government where commissioners answer only to the voters of the district they represent and be fully accountable to constituents or face removal at any time for non-representation.
