The majority of Powell Middle School fans who attended the Hernando County Middle School Conference volleyball championship match on Oct. 19 at Challenger School were very much surprised at the lack of sportsmanship shown by the Challenger teacher who was in charge of the awards ceremony.
Challenger was the better team and did win. Coach Dumas of Powell took her team outside for a few moments to calm her players down after the match before they returned to take part in the awards ceremony. The Challenger teacher went on and on in his praise of their team. When he presented the trophy to the team, the Powell team clapped and yelled for the Navigators. And that was that.
Not one word was said about Powell and their efforts.
The Panthers opened their season by getting whipped by Challenger, scoring only nine points in the first game and 11 in the second game. Coach Dumas and her players regrouped and ran the table the rest of the season to finish second. In the county title match, they gave the host team a run for their money, running out to an 8-2 lead in the first set before losing 25-19. They fell 25-13 in the second set.
It was great seeing the Hernando Today at the match and seeing a very long story with a nice color picture in the paper. However, there was not one comment from Coach Dumas. In the last paragraph there were three Powell girls mentioned for their good play. However, not one of those girls plays for Powell.
I appreciate the space to tip our hats for the great job Coach Dumas and her team did during the 2009 season. Thanks very much Maria for your time and efforts.
