All About Steve
After success earlier this summer in "The Proposal," Sandra Bullock returns in another comedy, this time as a crossword puzzle lover who stalks a CNN cameraman (Bradley Cooper) who she thinks is her soul mate. Unfortunately, the film lacks something comedy requires - that is, funny scenes. 87 minutes (PG-13; sexual content including innuendos).
Amelia
Hilary Swank has the lead role in this biography of Amelia Earhart, the woman who disappeared in 1937 while attempting to set a record by flying around the world. 111 minutes. (PG; for some sensuality, profanity, thematic elements and smoking)
Astro Boy
When a scientist loses his son, he creates a robot (the Astro Boy of the title) to replace him - only to find the robot doesn't fulfill his expectations. Astro Boy leaves and goes on a journey which eventually leads him back to his "father" and a city that needs saving. 94 minutes. (PG; for some action and peril, and brief mild profanity)
Capitalism: A Love Story
The new Michael Moore movie makes the argument that capitalism, at least as we know it, hasn't worked out so well. Unfortunately, the true love story here is the one Moore has with his own voice. Still, there's no denying he has point, you'll just have to sift through his presentation to find it. 120 minutes. (R; for some profanity)
Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
Adaption of the Darren Shan novel about a young man recruited as an assistant for a freak show, only to find himself embroiled in a war involving vampires and werewolves. 108 minutes. (PG-13; for sequences of intense supernatural violence and action, disturbing images, thematic elements and some profanity)
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs
In this animated film, a young inventor develops a machine that makes it rain food - only to have things go wrong when towns are flooded with pancakes, spaghetti and other food that won't stop falling from the sky. Based on the children's book by Judi and Ron Barrett. (PG; brief, mild language)
Couples Retreat
Vince Vaughn stars in and co-wrote (with Jon Favreau) this comedy about four couples on a tropical island vacation. One couple is working on their marriage, but the others soon realize they too must participate in the therapy sessions. Directed by Peter Billingsley, who you remember as Ralphie in "A Christmas Story." 107 minutes. (PG-13; on appeal for sexual content and profanity)
Fame
Remake of the 1980s movie about teachers and students at a performing arts high school in New York City. The TV-centric cast includes two "Frasier" stars - Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth - as well as "Will & Grace" star Megan Mullally. 107 minutes (PG; thematic material including teen drinking, a sexual situation and profanity)
Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag
This film follows fighter pilots as they train at Red Flag - a special training exercise for pilots, their last before flying in combat. 40 minutes. Not rated. Showing only at the Museum of Science & Industry's Imax Dome Theatre.
Halloween 2
Rob Zombie directs a follow-up to his remake of "Halloween," which proved successful in 2007. Without doubt, it will include the same amounts of blood and gore which came with the first.
This time, Zombie plans to explore what makes MichaeL Myers a murdering machine. 101 minutes.
I Can Do Bad All By Myself
In Tyler Perry's latest film, Madea (Perry) gives three children over to their self-involved aunt (Taraji P. Hensen) who struggles to get her life under control and provide a stable home. Singers Mary J. Blige and Gladys Knight are also in the cast. (PG-13; mature thematic material involving a sexual assault on a minor, violence, drug references and smoking)
The Informant!
Matt Damon stars in the latest film from director Steven Soderbergh - this time a comedy about a vice president for Arthur Daniels Midland who agrees to spy on his co-workers to aid a federal investigation into a price-fixing scheme.
The Invention of Lying
A man (Ricky Gervais) living in an alternate reality where no one lies finds out how powerful and effective lying can be when put to use for personal gain. Will he change his ways? It's a comedy, so we're thinking, yeah, probably. 100 minutes. (PG-13; profanity including some sexual material and a drug reference)
Jennifer's Body
Megan Fox stars as a cheerleader who becomes possessed by a demon and sets out to kill every boy in town. This horror flick is written by Diablo Cody, who wrote the Oscar-nominated script for "Juno." 102 minutes. (R; sexuality, violence, profanity and drug use).
Law Abiding Citizen
Ten years after his family is murdered, a still-angry father (Gerard Butler) begins to enact his plan of vengeance against the assistant district attorney (Jamie Foxx), who prosecuted the case, and everyone else involved with the plea bargain made with the killers. 108 minutes (R; strong bloody brutal violence and torture, a scene of rape, and pervasive profanity)
Paranormal Activity
Micro-budget horror film (reportedly made for only $15,000) revolves around a couple who start videotaping their home at night trying to catch ghostly activity. They do. 99 minutes. (R; for profanity).
Saw VI
Detective Hoffman has assumed Jigsaw's legacy of murder and mayhem, and this sixth installment promises to reveal the original Jigsaw's grand scheme. 90 minutes. (R; sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, and profanity)
The Stepfather
A young man (Peter Badgley) returns from military school to find that his mother (Sela Ward) living with a new boyfriend (David Harris) who he suspects might be a serial killer. 101 minutes (PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, disturbing images, mature thematic material and brief sensuality)
Surrogates
Set in the future, this film centers on a world where people rarely leave their home, interacting through "surrogates" - robots to which they are linked. But a series of surrogate murders requires a cop (Bruce Willis) to leave his home for the first time in years and pursue the killer. 88 minutes. (PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, disturbing images, language, sexuality and a drug-related scene)
Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D
Disney is releasing the two films (the first came out originally in 1995, the second in 1999). You get to see both of them for the price of one movie, plus they are in 3-D. Sweet.
Under the Sea 3D
Imax film provides a detailed glimpse into the life aquatic along the coastal regions of southern Australia and New Guinea, among other exotic locales. Jim Carrey provides narration. 40 minutes. (G). Showing only at the Museum of Science & Industry's Imax Dome Theatre.
Where the Wild Things Are
Director Spike Jonze adapts Maurice Sendak's beloved children's book to the big screen. The live-action movie centers on a young boy named Max who, when sent to bed without his supper, makes up an imaginary worlds where forest creatures crown Max as their king. 101 minutes (PG; mild thematic elements, some adventure action and brief language)
Zombieland
In this horror comedy, four people try to find ways to survive in a world overrun by zombies. But will Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) be able to get along well enough to unite against the zombies? 82 minutes (R; horror violence/gore and profanity)
New This Week
The Nightmare Before Christmas - 3D
Like "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2," this 1993 film from director Tim Burton - famous for its innovative use of stop-motion animation - is being released again, this time in 3-D. The story remains the same - Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town and tries to bring its ideas back to his hometown. Complications ensue. 76 minutes. (PG, some scary images)
Michael Jackson's This Is It
Interviews, rehearsals and backstage footage of Michael Jackson as he prepares for the London shows he ended up never playing. The biggest attraction of the film is that Jackson can be seen where he was happiest - on stage, working on songs and dance steps. 112 minutes. (PG; some suggestive choreography and scary images)
