Cancer survival given a choice

Published: October 29, 2009

Cancer has played a large role in Kim Crawford's life - first taking away her grandfather, father and now possibly her brother as well.

Despite having friends and family to support them, each one still seemed to believe they were alone in their fight against their disease, she said.

To help show those with cancer that they are not alone, and to remind everyone there is hope, Crawford and her fellow Relay For Life team, UP 4 Breakfast is UP 4 a Cure, is sponsoring a Christian concert called "Concert 4 a Cure" slated for noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Hernando County Fairgrounds.

"We need to raise money for cancer, but people also need a sense of faith, happiness - and hope." Crawford said. "And that they're not alone in this."

Crawford said 15 Christian musical groups from Florida and around the country are volunteering their time to participate in the all-day event. Tickets are $5 with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Food and drinks will also be available along with children's games.

The music, while Christian, will also be played in a different variety with some bands playing blues and contemporary to gospel and pop or alternative rock.

"We wanted to provide different types of music because even though it's all Christian music, there are a variety of people that we want to draw to this event," Crawford said. "And it's going to be all day so this way there's a variety that people can enjoy and participate."

She said she was amazed that, after contacting the different groups, which include the Spring Hill Acoustic Guitar Club, they were willing to donate not only their time performing, but to travel from as far away as Tennessee and Georgia.

Crawford said she's still seeking volunteers to help house some of the band members and maybe a church group considering a Sunday performance.

Meanwhile, she said if the event is successful she hopes to hold it annually. She added she'd like to see it grow each year.

"This is a great way to bring everyone together, including those with cancer, family members of those fighting cancer and cancer survivors," Crawford said.
