A gray fox watches over visitors from the branches of a large oak tree Friday at the Spring Hill Garden Club plant sale. Club members said the fox and its mate have been residents of the nursery and adjacent Nature Coast Botanical Gardens for several months. Two fox kits were born under a garden shed in the nursery recently. The gray fox is also called the ‘tree fox’ for its ability to climb a tree and is the only canine able to climb trees.

SPRING HILL - Spring Hill Garden Club will conduct its annual fall plant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3, at the plant nursery located at 1489 Parker Ave., off Spring Hill Drive. Along with reasonably priced plants for sale, there will be local garden product vendors.
Kathy Lockwood, Spring Hill Garden Club president and nursery manager, said the seven outside vendors will make the sale more interesting for customers.
"They will be selling ginger, bamboo, carnivorous plants and garden decorative items such as wind chimes and garden art," she said. "We try to have things that you wouldn't see at The Home Depot or Walmart."
Lockwood said the purpose of the semi-annual sales is to raise money for the botanical gardens.
"We have a couple projects in mind such as an irrigation system," she said. "We also want to make the gardens handicap-accessible by paving the main circular path."
The Garden Café will be serving sausage, hot dogs, doughnuts and beverages.
