I am writing to you because I can't believe you directed this Ponzi traffic scheme to generate ticket money to meet your budget needs. We all know the county didn't give you what you wanted.
On Monday morning, Oct. 26, I was going east on Spring Hill Drive. There was construction and a flagman at every block. At Pinehurst, just east of U.S. Highway 19, I was slowed by a flagman and deputy. The next block I was pulled in and given a ticket for no seat belt. The fine was $99. A lot, I thought.
I asked the deputy if he checked my driving record. He said no. I told him I have been in Hernando County since 1991 and never had a ticket here or anywhere in Florida. He said I broke the law. I did break the law, but the law I broke didn't hurt anyone else but me.
Sheriff Nugent, I believe in traffic enforcement, but for DUI, speeding, stop sign and red light running, not $99 tickets to seniors and unemployed people with good driving records.
Sheriff, I am sorry to say that you and your department have lost my respect. At my next VFW meeting, I will tell all my vet brothers the story; and I bet you will lose their respect, too. I also intend to send this letter to the local paper and hope they publish it.
Sheriff, giving seat belt tickets in a construction zone with flagmen is pretty sleazy police work.
