Deputies collecting for the holidays

BROOKSVILLE - Hernando County sheriff's deputies are combating more than crime this weekend by collecting food and toys for families this holiday season.

Sgt. Donna Black, public information officer for the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, said as part of Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving group - where deputies tackle community problems in their service area that aren't crime related - will be outside Walmart, Bealls and Publix stores collecting canned goods, toys and other items for those in need from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13.

Even if people don't plan to give items, she said they're encouraged to bring their children and stop by the stores where deputies will showcase a SWAT Humvee, AVTs, COPPS bicycles and Marine Unit jet skis.

"Along with gathering food and toys for families, this is also one way people can come and see the equipment we use and kids can interact with our deputies," Black said. "We're also asking those who stop by to help us help others this holiday season. In this economy especially, we know times are hard on everybody, but they're especially hard on people who likely never thought they'd be in a situation to be in need."
Deputies will be at the following locations:

•Walmart, 1485 Commercial Way, Spring Hill.

•Walmart, 4305 S. Broad St., Brooksville.

•Bealls 13023 Cortez Blvd., Spring Hill.

•Publix Supermarket at 160 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill.

Black said COPPS is a program in which deputies focus on community concerns outside the realm of law enforcement. She said they might try to help foster community involvement to help the elderly in their area, help resolve neighbor disputes and help other community organizations.

In light of economic hardships, Black said it's more important now than ever to collect food and toys for children as the unemployment count continues to rise in Hernando County. September's jobless rate in the county was 13.8 percent.

She said deputies will be looking to collect canned goods and other food items along with toys for children and teenagers.

For those not sure what to give, Black said donating money is easier for the deputies, who can then purchase gifts or food for families based on what's needed.
