Hernando County Sheriff's deputies were called shortly after 9:45 a.m. to Jenkins Creek Park for a report of a body floating in the water.
A couple walked along a bridge over the creek when they noticed the body, said Sgt. Donna Black, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
The victim was later identified as James Henry Mason, 49, of Spring Hill. His vehicle was located in the parking lot near Jenkins Creek and a handgun was located with the body, deputies said.
The park is located a short distance north of Hernando Beach.
Black said early indications show the death is a possible suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Mason's family has been notified, she said.
