BROOKSVILLE - Whether it's to own a "one of a kind" firearm, to learn more about gun safety or other programs that might be offered in the area, area residents will have their chance to do this and more - and get a meal, too.
Members of the Hernando County Friends of the National Rifle Association will host their first fundraiser supper and auction at 6 p.m. tomorrow at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 20428 Cortez Boulevard. Tickets are $40.
The event will include dinner along with a silent auction of firearms, custom knives and artworks.
Billie Potter, who's helping to form the area chapter, said the event would kick off the forming of the group while offering a chance for other enthusiasts in the area to learn more about what the chapter has to offer. All proceeds from the event will go toward the group's events programming.
"Most people think that our group's about the Second Amendment, but that's only part of it," Potter said. "A huge part of what we do deals with children's programs and gun safety along with introducing them to target shooting and hunting."
Potter believes there are limited activities children and teens can participate in and that shooting targets or hunting would provide another opportunity for both parents and teens.
"We do actually have a lot of hunters in this area, believe it or not," Potter said. "There are a lot of times we'll have guys who say they're hunters and have hunted all their lives sit in on one of our classes and say, 'I never thought of that.' For the kids, some of them might not want to hunt, but it gives them a chance to learn how to target shoot and handle a gun safely and they may find that they never knew what they were missing."
With the auction being the first event for the group, Potter said he doesn't expect to have a huge turnout. For now, he said he and other group members hope to connect with fellow enthusiasts and involve other community organizations.
