Workshop

Hernando County Extension Office will offer a free class entitled, "Florida Friendly Landscape Maintenance" at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Hernando County Extension Office, 19490 Oliver St., off U.S. 41, Brooksville. The class will be presented by John Korycki of Florida Yards and Neighborhoods. The class will cover practices that can lower the amount of time, work and water needed to maintain a landscape. Computer Club

Hernando Computer Club will present "Vista after the Basics," part two of two, by Ron Purkhiser at 1 p.m. in the South Room; "Open Office" by Joann Frucchione at 1 p.m. in the North Room; and "The Great Photography Show" by Fred Wise, Tim Neddy, Ron Purkhiser and Brigitte Haag at 7 p.m. in the North Room, all on Thursday, May 28, at Grace Presbyterian Church located at 8375 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. In addition, the club will present "Introduction to Computers with Windows XP, part four of four, by Pat Turek at 10 a.m. Friday, May 29, in the North Room of the church. Community Activities

Cub Scout Pack 459 will host a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Elks Lodge 2582 located at 14494 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. The dinner will include meatballs and garlic bread. Boy Scout Troop 459 will offer its monthly pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at Elks Lodge 2582 located at 14494 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. The breakfast will consist of three pancakes and a choice of bacon or sausage, plus coffee and juice. Eggs, grits and toast will also be available. Either choice will be $3.50 per person.

Toastmasters Club, Nature Coast Orators, will host an open house from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, at Oak Hill Hospital behind the cafeteria located at 11375 Cortez Blvd. Come learn about the club's six-week Speechcraft Seminar starting June 17. Embroiders' Guild of America, Sandhill Crane Chapter, will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Christ Lutheran Church, 475 North Avenue, Brooksville. Chapter president and nationally certified teacher Ginny Smith will teach a class that includes blackwork and creative use of threads and beads. All types of needlework are covered including cross stitch, needlepoint, crewel, and surface embroidery. Nature Coast Decorative Artists meet at 9 a.m. the first Saturday of each month at the Weeki Wachee Senior Citizens Club, 3357 Susan Drive, Spring Hill. The next scheduled meeting will be held June 6, and the project will be Vicki Alley teaching an etched design on a heart-shaped candy dish and floral painted cover. An extra class will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 30, with Pat Otto teaching poppies in acrylics. Several workshops are held throughout the year. Monthly projects are designed for all skill levels with an array of mediums and surfaces. A brief meeting, skill building demo and monthly project are featured. The artists are affiliated with The Society of Decorative Painters. At its monthly meetings, the artists collaborate on philanthropic projects as well as projects to improve their painting skills. Brooksville Woman's Club will hold its monthly luncheon and general meeting on Wednesday, June 3, at its clubhouse located at 131 South Main St., Brooksville. The luncheon will be held at noon, with the meeting at 1 p.m. The donation will be $6 per person. The program will be on the topic of "Education" by Chairman Barmell Dixon, HOBY student. Marine Corps League, Detachment 708, will hold Wing Night from 5 to 8 p.m. every Thursday at the Detachment located at 8405 Sunshine Grove Road, Brooksville. Library Programs

Hernando County Public Library System will show a movie at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the East Hernando Branch Library located at 6457 Windmere Road, Brooksville. After an accident, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark creates a suit that sustains his life. When he heals, he decides to use his technology to fight crime and leads a double life as Iron Man in this comic book adventure. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 126 minutes. History

War of the Roses Chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire (DBE) will meet at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Spring Hill Branch Library located at 9220 Spring Hill Drive. "The Hernando Four," four women whose organizations provide support for U.S. troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, will talk about ways that individuals and groups can also support the troops. The business meeting and talk will be followed by refreshments and socializing. Any woman interested in learning about the Daughters of the British Empire is welcome to attend. The DBE is a nonprofit, nonpolitical and nonsectarian American organization that will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Membership is open to women who are British by birth, ancestry, or naturalization or whose husbands are British. Recreation

Brooksville Elks Lodge 2582 will hold its monthly steak shoot from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the Lodge located at 14494 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. The event is similar to a bingo game wherein three attached cards are played. As cards are called, several bonus and grand bonus prizes of various meats can be won. Ethnic

Italian American Club will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2301 Deltona Blvd., Spring Hill. Members will be treated to a free ice cream social. After the meeting, members and guests will play bingo. The object of the club is for fellowship, social activities, trips, picnics, games as well as interesting speakers plus occasional entertainers at its meetings. Dues are $20 per year, and it is not necessary to be Italian to join the club. Complimentary coffee and dessert will be served to club members and guests after the business meeting. State Clubs

New York State Club will meet Thursday, June 4, at the Knights of Columbus, 10470 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. The dinner selection will be stuffed shells with meatballs or chicken. Illinois Club of Spring Hill will meet at 1 p.m. Friday, June 5, at Forest Oaks Lutheran Church, 8555 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. A white elephant auction will be featured, and members are encouraged to bring something that is wrapped to be auctioned. The object of the club is to promote fellowship, social and fraternal activities for former residents of Illinois. In addition to monthly meetings, activities include eating out at a local restaurant each month and group travel opportunities. Annual dues are $12 per person. Radio Club

Spring Hill Amateur Radio Club (SHARC) meets at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of every month in Cafeteria Room 2 at Oak Hill Hospital Building A located at 11375 Cortez Blvd. Anyone interested in Ham Radio is welcome to attend. Testing for an FCC license is conducted at 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the same location. The club operates a 2-meter repeater on 146.805 MHz (no tone). Every Tuesday except meeting night, the club conducts a Club net at 8 p.m. Anyone with a Ham Radio license is welcome to participate in both nets. Seniors Activities

Senior Citizens Club of Hernando County offers the following activities at the hall located at 7925 Rhanbuoy Road, Spring Hill: card games are held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Monday and Thursday. Group road trips such as Biloxi, Sterling and Hard Rock plus cruises are periodically arranged for members and their guests. Club membership is $20 annually. Thrift Shops

SPCA Thrift Shop, 9075 Grant St., adjacent to the shelter, Brooksville, is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Housewares, books, games, toys and clothing for the entire family are featured. All clothes are $5 a bag. All proceeds from the thrift shop benefit the care and upkeep of the animals at the shelter. Donations are welcome and can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays or Fridays, but large furniture or appliances cannot be accepted. To reach the SPCA shelter and thrift shop, take Sunshine Grove Road (off State Road 50) to Taylor Street, then turn left onto Grant Street. For information, call the thrift shop at 352-592-4709.

Daystar Lifecenter Thrift Store, 7120 Hope Hill Road, off State Road 50, Brooksville, is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon Fridays and Saturdays. Clothing, crafts, furniture, housewares, books, small appliances, electrical items and Christmas decorations are offered. The store is located one-quarter mile behind St. Anthony Catholic Church. Karen's Kit 'n Kaboodle (St. Andrew's Thrift Shop), 2301 Deltona Blvd., Spring Hill, is now open from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The boutique-style shop features a $5 bag sale the second Tuesday of every month. Donations are appreciated and can be left in the shop during hours of operation or in the drop-off bin after hours. Jericho Road Ministries has a thrift store located at 16479 Wiscon Road, Brooksville, and in the Sunrise Plaza at 31170 Cortez Blvd., Ridge Manor, and also has an expanded book department at its thrift store located at 15319 Cortez Blvd. (State Road 50), Brooksville. All stores are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Clothing for adults and children, household items, furniture, kitchenware, toys, as well as numerous specialty items are available for sale. The thrift stores were established for the purpose of supporting the Jericho Road Men's Rescue Mission Shelter located at 1090 Mondon Hill Road in Brooksville. Donations are welcome and can be brought to the Wiscon Road thrift store during business hours or larger items can be picked up daily. For information or to schedule a pick-up, call 352-797-9009.

Seniors Programs

Mid-Florida Community Services provides nutritious meals year-round to seniors age 60 and over. Seniors are welcome to visit any one of its four dining sites within the county. In addition, the Meals on Wheels program provides nutritious lunches five days a week to seniors who are homebound. The daily contact by the program's volunteers ensures a visit by someone who provides companionship, while checking on the person's health and well being. Experience Works, a senior work force solution, provides information and assistance with employment and training to income eligible seniors age 55 and older. For information, call Amy at 352-200-3042.
