Word games
Gail Leatherwood and Peter Stathis's recent letters both alluded to the word "socialist" in titles of countries that have been traditional enemies of the United States, such as the Soviet Socialist Republic, thereby implying how evil any political affiliation with the word socialist or socialism is.
If Mr. Leatherwood or Mr. Stathis wish to play the word-game then why not apply their same fear-mongering and red-baiting misuse of words to the word "democratic or democracy" - as in the German Democratic Republic under Hitler, which wasn't a democracy or a republic either.
Or why not apply the Democratic People's Republic of Korea?
And the same goes for all the other democratic republics that are really fascist or authoritarian systems as well.
The United States is hardly a democracy. Real democracy is inherent in true socialism.
