Hernando County Fishing Club Tourney results

HOMOSASSA – The Hernando County Fishing Club held a members' only tournament last week on the Homosassa River. Despite the windy conditions, the tourney was a success.
Joe Russello, T.J. Alleva and Rick Hall captured first place in the team division edging Rich Labelle, Ginny Lentz, Gary Beamon.
Individual first place went to Ginny Lentz while Hall finished runner-up.
Hall also captured the largest sea trout.
Art Testoff walked away with the largest fish topping Bill Burton.
Prizes for the tournament were donated by the following companies/organizations: Bare Bones Fish and Steak House, Hernando Beach Bait and Tackle, Magic Manatee Marina, Marguerita Grill, Marvelous Moose Creations, Precision Tackle, 'R Beach Restaurant, Thunder Party Boat, U.S.C.G. Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run set for April 26

BROOKSVILLE – The City of Brooksville Recreation Department will host a free Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run Competition for area youth at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 26 at Tom Varn Park.
Competitors are divided into four age divisions: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition leading up to the national finals at 2009 Major Level All-Star Game.
All participants must bring a copy of their certificate and complete a registration/waiver form prior to the start of competition.

HCRD sets flag football, softball meetings

BROOKSVILLE – The Hernando County Recreation Department will hold a coaches/players flag football meeting at the HCRD Office at 205 E. Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1. A softball meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m.
All flag football games will be played at Veterans Memorial Park beginning in May. The softball schedules features games at the Anderson Snow Sports Complex and at Veterans Memorial Park.
In both meetings, team fees will be discussed.

Fit N Fun '4' Kids exercise program

BROOKSVILLE – Fit N Fun "4" Kids is a new one-hour exercise program offered by the City of Brooksville Recreation Department that allows children the opportunity to play video games powered by GameBikes, which are stationery bikes that are used to play the games.
The program is offered to children, ages 7-14, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, Brooksville.
The program is free to youth who are more than 85 percent of the recommended Body Mass Index (BMI).

Bierwiler Memorial Co-ed Softball Tourney set April 25-26

BROOKSVILLE – City of Brooksville Recreation is hosting the First Annual Captain Scott M. Bierwiler Co-ed Softball Tournament on April 25-26 at the Jerome Brown Community Center. The tourney is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 164 and A.P.A.C.K.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Capt. Scott M. Bierwiler Memorial Fund set up by Washington Mutual Bank.
The event will be limited to 20 teams featuring a double elimination format. The entry fee cost is $200 per team.
There will be trophies and T-Shirts for the winning team.
Registration deadline is April 15. Teams are limited to 14 players.

Help send Springstead alum overseas

BREVARD, N.C. – Former Springstead High volleyball player Brooke Seaman, now a junior at Brevard College in North Carolina, is reaching out to her hometown community in hopes of raising funds for a trip overseas.
The 2006 Springstead graduate has been chosen to play for a team sponsored by USA Athletes International that will compete in Holland June 8-16.
Seaman needs to raise $3,893 to cover the cost of the trip. To donate, send a check made payable to USA Athletes International with Seaman's name and trip number (29723). Send checks to 13095 South Mur-Len Road, Suite 140, Olathe, Kansas, 66062.

Learn to scuba
    
SPRING HILL - Learn to scuba at the Hernando County Family YMCA. Classes begin April 7 and run Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9:30 p.m.
This course includes six class and pool sessions for ages 12 and older in good physical health and comfortable in and under the water.
There will also be classes from 8:30 a.m-4:30 p.m. for ages 10 and older, plus open water dives on Thursday and Friday in the Gulf of Mexico or Rainbow River at $20 per day.
Upon completion of the classes persons will be certified as Open Water Scuba Diver, recognized worldwide.
The cost is $120 for YMCA members and $140 for non-members, plus $60 for use of scuba equipment.
Personal equipment, mask, fins and snorkel are not included, but can be purchased at a discount from instructors: Jack Farrell at 727-861-3483 or 800-633-1633 and Mark Butler at 352-214-1171, who are YMCA, PADI and NAUI instructors.

NCT Bowling Team Car Wash

BROOKSVILLE – The Nature Coast Technical High School Bowling Booster Club has been established to help raise the funds for the boys and girls teams to compete in 2009-10. The bowling team has scheduled a fundraising car wash on Saturday, May 9 at Advance Auto Parts located at 14321 Spring Hill Dr.

Brooksville CC prepares for Charity Classic

BROOKSVILLE - The Brooksville Country Club is teeing up for the 34th annual Charity Classic to be held Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17. One hundred-twenty slots are available and are expected to fill quickly.
"This tournament has always been one of our premier events," commented BCC general manager David Alberson.  "Now, thanks in large part to the excellent condition of the course as well as our signature quarry holes we're seeing a renewed interest in this great tournament."
"Word has certainly gotten out," acknowledges Roger Eppley, BCC's Director of Golf.  "We're ready for it.  It's a great value for golfers because the two-day tournament also includes a free practice round any time during the week," he continued.  "Best of all, the biggest winner is the charity."  
With help from tournament sponsors and players, last year's tournament raised more than $11,000 for Pasco-Hernando Hospice.  Hospice will once again be the primary beneficiary of this year's tournament.
Tee times for the Charity Golf Classic start at 8:30 a.m. 
Top finishers will have a chance of winning their share of a $6,000 prize fund, as well as possibly taking part in a $1,000 shoot-out sponsored by Register Chevrolet.

TAMPA – Tampa SportsFest is seeking teams to participate in a one day exhibition of competitive youth sports events Saturday, April 25, in Hillsborough County.
The event is looking for 11-and-under and 12-and-under baseball teams, 12-and-under and 14-and-under boys and girls basketball teams, and 12-and-under boys soccer and 14-and-under girls soccer programs
Travel teams, school teams and club teams are welcome to participate.

Spring Lake 5K set May 23

BROOKVILLE – The third annual Spring Lake 5K Run and two-mile fun walk/run is set for Saturday, May 23 at the Arc Nature Coast, 5283 Neff Lake Road.
Race-day registration begins at 7 a.m. with the race to follow at 8 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded from first-third place in five age groups.
Entry fee is $25 and $20 for fun/walk.
T-shirt is guaranteed if registration is received by May 8.

Charity fishing tournament to benefit Hernando-Pasco Hospice

BROOKSVILLE – The Hogan Law Firm is sponsoring a charity fishing tournament to benefit Hernando-Pasco Hospice beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 18 from Bayport.
Early registration runs until Feb. 28 and costs $75 per angler with their own boat, bait and tackle and $475 for individual anglers.
Individual angler registration fees include a boat, bait and a guide. All anglers will receive a gift bag, angler shirt, and breakfast, lunch and dinner.
First place is 30 percent of the total registration fees while second place is 20 percent of registration fees and third place is a guided local fishing trip.
