BROOKSVILLE - The Humane Society of the Nature Coast has moved up one spot in the contest for a $1 million makeover.
It's promising news for the no-kill shelter with just one day left in the points-getting phase of the contest organized by the pet information Web site zootoo.com.
The shelter earns points when visitors register on the site and designate the Humane Society as the facility they are supporting. The more active visitors are on the site, the more points the shelter gets. There is no cost to register.
Phase one of the contest ends at 11:59 p.m. Friday, March 13.
The top 20 points earners become semi-finalists. During phase two, ZooToo and its advisers will tour all of the shelters to get a sense of their needs and select 10 finalists. In the third phase, the public votes for the most deserving shelter.
The first runner up wins $195,000. The second runner up gets $25,000 and the rest of the seven finalists get $10,000. The other 10 semi-finalists receive $5,000 each.
