HERNANDO BEACH - A man was killed after he overcorrected, swerved and crashed his vehicle into a tree and overturned in a creek Monday night, troopers said.
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol responded shortly after 8:15 p.m. to the crash scene along Shoal Line Boulevard, a mile north of Petit Lane.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered a 2003 Ford pickup overturned in Jenkins Creek, troopers said. The driver, James P. Ramirez, 40, of Spring Hill, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation by FHP revealed Ramirez was traveling southbound along Shoal Line when he traveled off the road and onto the west shoulder.
He overcorrected and traveled back onto the roadway, swerved across the southbound lane and onto the northbound lane, according to the accident report.
The driver overcorrected again and the pickup traveled in a southwest direction across the southbound lane while rotating in a "clockwise direction" and continued along the west shoulder, troopers said.
The pickup struck a street sign and a tree before it overturned and splashed into the water along the west side of the street, the report stated.
The crash remains under investigation and a toxicology report is under way, troopers said.
