BROOKSVILLE - To cut down on crime, South Brooksville residents have asked the county for months to install street lighting along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and other streets.
County commissioners Tuesday took the first step to light up the neighborhood by asking staff to come back with more specifics, including costs and placement of lights.
And it appears commissioners are leaning toward the creation of a Multiple Service Benefit Unit (MSBU) and have the residents pay for a portion of the installation and service.
The idea became even more attractive after the sheriff indicated he may be interested in kicking in money for the project.
Assistant county attorney Erica Moore said the total cost of street light installation is $30,000. The sheriff would contribute $20,000, leaving a balance of $10,000, which residents would pay as an assessment on their tax bill.
Moore said the sheriff would take the $20,000 out of his drug forfeiture trust fund.
"This is not a handout but a hand-up," Moore said.
During community workshops, residents said street lights would help cut down on drug activity and other crimes occurring at night.
County Commissioner Rose Rocco, who is taking the lead on the project, said the investment would "enhance that area and create a safer environment."
The item will be formally placed on an upcoming agenda for a final vote.
