It was an old-fashioned family picnic held at Tom Varn Park on June 13, with a family picnic was sponsored by the Hernando County Democrat Party. A sub-theme was obvious in emphasizing family values from Brooksville to the White House, noting President Barack Obama's insistence on spending valuable family moments together recently in Paris, London and Georgetown with Michelle and their children despite criticism in some conservative quarters about the use of special security in accessing Air Force I and ground security to places of interest for the family.
Scores of families wandered into the park for grilled foods, soft drinks, games and camaraderie. Smoke from grilling wafted on breezes in the warm summer day and music from an electronic disc no bigger than a thumb-nail provided interludes for every generation. Balloons, face painting, crafts, three-legged races, cakes and cookies caught the attention of both younger and older family members.
Cy Wingrove, Democrat chairman and former educator in Hernando County, organized the event.
