A recent article in this paper indicates the state of Florida has finally caught up with my 2007 Buick Lucerne. Since the day I drove it out of the Rick Mathews Buick parking lot, it lets me know if I have failed to fasten my seat belt. If I have a passenger in the other front seat, the car also beeps again to indicate that the other seat belt should also be fastened.
It also lets me know if I fail to turn off my turn signal after I make a turn. If I shift into reverse, it also takes a look behind the car, turns on a red warning light above my back window, and gives me a few beeps to let me know there is something in the way.
I tell folks that the car is smarter than I am, and it certainly is in those respects, but I am glad it is. If the cops choose to stop me to check on the seat belts, I will shake hands with them and tell them they are doing a good job. Tell the folks that are complaining about the new law that it might save their lives.
