BROOKSVILLE - A homeless man was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Tuesday night as he pedaled down a dark stretch of Broad Street.
Police said they found David Williams, 51, on the shoulder of North Broad Street around 8:30 p.m., in between Saxon Avenue and Mondon Hill Road. Details are few, including how long Williams was on the side of the road waiting for help.
"Right now we have nothing," Police Chief George Turner said Wednesday. "No witnesses, no leads."
Williams was dressed in dark clothes, including a black shirt, black jacket, black shoes and blue jeans. His purple woman's bicycle had no lights, but it did have a rear red reflector and amber-colored pedal reflectors.
Turner said several drivers interviewed by police didn't see Williams on his bicycle until they had almost passed him.
Williams died at the hospital from his injuries Tuesday night.
Anyone with information is urged to call Sgt. Marvin Maeder at 352-540-3800.
