BAYPORT - A jogger discovered a man's bloody body slumped behind the wheel of a sport utility vehicle on Wednesday morning.
The grisly find around 9:45 a.m. prompted a 911 call that brought deputies out to isolated Bayou Drive. One look inside the white Mazda SUV was enough to declare the death "suspicious."
By 11 a.m., detectives' cars and forensics vans lined single file on the narrow road bounded by mud flats and scrub brush. A strong breeze with a sea salt tang toyed with the yellow crime scene tape.
Bayou Drive connects Pine Island Drive and State Road 550 as it heads towards its terminus at Bayport Park.
The spot is considered popular with fishermen and folks wanting to take in the sunset.
Sgt. Donna Black, sheriff's spokeswoman, said late Wednesday afternoon that detectives were waiting for a fingerprint comparison before confirming the identity of the deceased. She added that there were "indicators" that this was a suicide, but couldn't go into further detail.
