NCT Nearly Blown Away at Hurricane Duals

PALM HARBOR - On Saturday, Nature Coast Technical Head Coach Mike Lastra watched as his somewhat depleted team went 2-3 in the Palm Harbor University High Hurricane Duals.
With the Sharks two weeks shy of the Class 1A, District 5 Tournament at Citrus High, Saturday's results were more of a 50-50 result than anything else.
"We were supposed to wrestle in a tournament up in Jacksonville this weekend, but it's just too far to go," said Lastra. "Besides this was closer and their are some good teams in the tournament.
"And that's what we wanted today. We weren't so much worried about winning team matches, but we wanted some of our wrestlers to be in some good individual matches."
The Sharks, who were without four regular starters, were in a pool group with Tampa-Berkeley Prep, Dunedin, Clearwater-Countryside and New Port Richey-River Ridge.

Solid start

NCT began the round robin in good shape as it bested Berkeley Prep, 66-12, thanks to seven pins in the match.
Later the Sharks dropped matches to Dunedin (61-9), Countryside (49-24) and River Ridge (40-33) before winning their cross-bracket match, 51-25 to Mitchell.
On the day, the Sharks went 35-22 overall with 21 pins.
NCT was paced by seniors Shayne Gracteroly (171 pounds) and Rockkhem Greene (189) who both went 4-1 on the day.
Along with them Blake Chandler, David Simonson, Scott Cronin and Matt Lambert each posted  3-2 records.
With the regular season coming to end next weekend at The Villages, Coach Lastra believes his team is coming around as they prepare for the 1A-5 event at Inverness.
"Lots of people forget we were third last year at the districts," Lastra said. "I know that Citrus and Hernando are still the teams to beat, but I expect us to be in the top two this year."
The Pinellas County tourney matched some of the Shark grapplers against some solid teams like Dunedin.
"My main goal today was to get some tough matches for our guys," recalled Lastra. "And they did, they wrestled against some people who went to the state tournament last year.
"We went 2-3 as a team and that was OK, but we should have everyone back in time for the districts at Citrus in two weeks."
