SPRING HILL - Construction workers have begun breaking through the dirt and laying down the concrete at the future site of the Shoppes at Avalon.
The shopping center will be anchored by a 45,000-square-foot Publix that will include a bakery and pharmacy.
Stiles Corp., a development company out of Fort Lauderdale, announced late last week it was beginning the construction. The project is expected to be finished by the fall.
The Shoppes at Avalon will be located at the corner of Anderson Snow Road and County Line Road. The location was desirable in large part to its proximity to the Suncoast Parkway.
Shannon Patten, a spokeswoman for Lakeland-based Publix, said applications are being accepted for the new store, although no opening date has been announced.
It will be the eighth Publix store in Hernando County.
Stiles and the grocery chain partnered to purchase the 30-acre site in the summer of 2007, according to a media release.
The shopping center also is located next to the Villages of Avalon and less than a mile from Trillium - two of the newest residential communities in Spring Hill. They have nearly 1,700 units combined.
The Shoppes at Avalon will include 64,000 square feet of total space and will include additional 17,150 square feet of retail and office space for lease and eight outparcels for sale or lease.
