BROOKSVILLE - The woman who former City Clerk Karen Phillips intended to succeed her has done just that.
Deputy City Clerk Janice Peters has been tapped to take over as city clerk, City Manager Jennene Norman-Vacha said Wednesday.

Peters was the only internal candidate of a field of more than 20 applicants, and her "inside information" on the city's operations was a big asset, Norman-Vacha said. Norman-Vacha picked Peters from three semi-finalists with the help of Finance Director Steve Baumgartner.

"She has a lot of really good ideas to help us build and grow even more," Norman-Vacha said.

She said Peters has a "good understanding" of the goal to improve the city's records management system.

"She has a great personality, a lot of high energy, and those are all critical qualifications for a successful city clerk," Norman-Vacha said.

Peters, 48, said Wednesday that she views the job as a long-term commitment.

"I'm excited about being a part of where the city's going," Peters said.

She said she is less than six months away from earning her certification as a municipal clerk, a requirement for the job. She plans to then work toward her master municipal clerk certification, which will take about four years.

She also is working toward her associate degree through Penn Foster, an online program.

She said her work ethic is one of her greatest strengths.

Peters was hired three years ago by Phillips, who told her she was looking for someone to groom for the clerk's position to make for a smooth transition when Phillips retired.

That retirement came last December, sooner than many expected. Phillips, 55, said at the time she felt it was time to move on.

Earlier in the year, Norman-Vacha reorganized the city's administration team, shifting some duties away from the city clerk, which had also served as director of administration. Phillips' salary was cut.

Peters will earn an annual salary of $35,588.

Before coming to the city, the native of Thibodeaux, La. worked in the recording department of the Hernando County Clerk's Office.

Her husband Matt is manager of the county's Veteran Services department. The couple have four adult children ranging in age from 24 to 28.
