BROOKSVILLE - The bids are in for the proposed judicial center.
Now it's a matter of grading them.
An 11-member committee sat down Friday afternoon in the county commission chambers to decide the best way to do that.
They already had the five criteria that would be applied to the nine proposals from contractors hoping to build the judicial center. Those criteria include financing possibilities, the experience of the contractor and the quality of their work.
Friday's task was to decide how much weight to assign each of those criteria. Some, such as County Commissioner David Russell, considered financing the "make or break" issue. Assistant County Engineer Greg Sutton wanted more emphasis placed on quality of the work.
After about 15 minutes of discussion, they settled on these guidelines: quality is assigned 30 points; characteristics, 20 points; financing, 30 points; benefits and compatibility, 10; and miscellaneous other factors, 10.
The members of the committee will evaluate each of the proposals over the next three weeks and assign a number to each one. For instance, a mediocre finance option might get a 15 instead of the full 30.
The judicial center is the brainchild of Senior Circuit Judge Daniel Merritt Sr., who has been fighting for extra space at the courthouse for years. There's no firm location for the center yet, but the general consensus is that it should be somewhere in downtown Brooksville.
The next meeting of the Judicial Complex RFP (request for proposal) Evaluation Team is tentatively set for Feb. 6.
