KISSIMMEE - With his team already down its best wrestler, and with another key teammate taken out of the mix, Nature Coast Technical senior Shayne Gracteroly knew he had to step up.

The Sharks entered the grueling two-day Poinciana Duals at Kissimmee-Poinciana High minus state-qualifier David Simonson, nursing an ankle injury suffered a week earlier in the Springstead Invitational.

Then they lost Matt Lambert, after the senior had gone 6-0 in pool play, when he developed a rash during Saturday's action.

Still Nature Coast managed a respectable fourth-place showing at the 14-team tournament, helped largely by a 10-0 performance by Gracteroly at 171 pounds.

"I had a lot of takedowns and just finished my matches," Gracteroly said. "I wrestled real aggressive this week."

His weekend included five pins and two technical falls. He also benefitted from three forfeits as he improved his season mark to 28-7.

"Since Kiwanis (Invitational) he's only lost two matches. He's 20-something and two," Nature Coast Head Coach Mike Lastra said. "He's a weird wrestler because he's real tall and lanky at 171 but he's also one of the strongest in the area.

"He's getting excited about the sport and he's peaking at the right time."

Strong start

The Sharks, competing in Pool B, won their opening three matches on Friday, defeating Gainesville-Buchholz (46-30), Poinciana (42-31) and Florida Air Academy (74-6).

But they ran into eventual tournament runner-up Lakeland-George Jenkins and fell 36-30, and followed with a 42-39 loss to Dunnellon to complete Friday's action.

They finished pool play up on Saturday morning with a 43-22 defeat at the hands of Gulf, the team that went on to take the tournament title.

In the championship bracket, Nature Coast faced the top seed coming out of Pool A, East Lake, and went down 57-18.

After bouncing back with a 56-24 triumph over Haines City and turning the tables on Dunnellon, 42-41, the Sharks met up with East Lake once more in the consolation final to determine third place.

That rematch was closer but still produced the same final result as the first contest, this time with East Lake winning by a score of 49-30.

Nature Coast went 5-5 in the meet and now has a 15-11 dual record on the season.

"We wrestled good considering the way our lineup got a little shook up (Saturday) morning," Lastra said. "We got fourth with six freshmen and three sophomores in the lineup. They wrestled really well. Kids stepped up big.

"If we had Lambert and David (Simonson), I think we'd be in the finals. We lost to George Jenkins by one match. It's not an excuse; it is what it is and we still wrestled well with those guys not in the lineup."

Lambert went 5-0 at 145 and 1-0 at 152, collecting two pins overall before sitting down for the remainder of the second day.

Tyler Forand went 7-3 with five pins splitting time between 103 and 112. Scott Cronin had the same record with six pins between 125 and 130. Luke McCarty went 6-3 with five pins at 160.

Nature Coast has one more meet next weekend – The Villages Invitational – before the Class 1A, District 5 Meet on Feb. 7 at Citrus High.

"I like our chances to be a dark horse in the district," Lastra said. "Hernando has got a lot of studs; Citrus has got a lot of studs. But I think we've got enough to keep up with them."
